North Cyprus is a student island. From Famagusta to Nicosia, from Kyrenia to Guzelyurt, every city has its own campus, its own halls of residence and its own rush at the start of term; tens of thousands of international students share the same calendar every year. And the first entry on that calendar is always the same: a flight landing after dark, two large suitcases in hand, and a campus address you've never seen before. That's why a student airport transfer is worth arranging in advance — the fare is fixed before you travel, your driver waits at arrivals with your name on a board, and you never have to look for a bus stop with your luggage. Here's how the same journeys work, from registration week to graduation.

Which airport for your campus?

North Cyprus has its own airport, Ercan, and because it sits in the middle of the island it is close to every campus city. Larnaca and Paphos in the south are the common alternatives for students flying direct from Europe. City by city:

  • Famagusta — Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and the student district around it. About 40 minutes and 50 km from Ercan, a fixed £55: Ercan to Famagusta transfer. From Larnaca it's about an hour, £90: Larnaca to Famagusta. From Paphos, around 2h 30m and £200.
  • Nicosia — Near East University and the capital's other campuses. Only 20 minutes and 18 km from Ercan, £45: Ercan to Nicosia transfer. From Larnaca about 50 minutes, £80: Larnaca to Nicosia.
  • Kyrenia — Girne American University and the other campuses along the north coast. About 35 minutes and 40 km from Ercan, £55: Ercan to Kyrenia transfer. From Larnaca about 1h 15m, £100: Larnaca to Kyrenia.
  • Guzelyurt (Morphou) — the METU Northern Cyprus Campus at Kalkanlı and other campuses in the west. About 50 minutes from Ercan, £55: Ercan to Guzelyurt transfer. From Larnaca £80, from Paphos £120 — being in the west, Guzelyurt is far closer to Paphos than any other campus city.
  • İskele and the Long Beach area — campuses and student apartments on the east coast. About 45 minutes from Ercan, £55: Ercan to İskele Long Beach transfer. From Larnaca £110.

First arrival: registration weeks

The second half of September and the start of February are the two busiest stretches of the year at Ercan. Flights land back to back, hundreds of new students come out of the same doors at the same time, and whatever cars are waiting outside disappear quickly. In those weeks, booking ahead isn't a luxury — it's the practical option.

Three things make a registration-week arrival easy:

  • Booking in advance — the car is assigned to you. No queue outside the terminal, no negotiating a price with your bags on the pavement.
  • A meet-and-greet with a name board — your driver waits at the exit holding your name. For a student arriving alone in a country they don't know yet, that's the detail that matters most.

When you book, give the exact drop-off rather than just the campus name: the block of your halls, the street of your apartment, or "the registration building". Campuses are large, and the right gate genuinely saves time.

The luggage reality: you're carrying a year of your life

A holidaymaker arrives with one case. A student arrives with a year of belongings. A typical first arrival is two large suitcases, a cabin bag and usually a rucksack as well — and if your family travels with you, that quickly becomes four cases.

So always state the number of bags when you book. A standard saloon car takes two large suitcases and hand luggage comfortably; anything beyond that, or a full family, calls for the 7-seat Vito minibus. On the Guzelyurt line the Vito prices are fixed too: Larnaca to Guzelyurt £100 and Paphos to Guzelyurt £140. On other routes, if you need the larger vehicle we quote it before you travel, in writing — never on arrival.

When the family comes to visit

A student transfer is rarely a one-off. Graduation, a mid-term visit, dropping a first-year off at registration — the same roads get used several times a year. What families usually need is this:

  • Airport to hotel, then short hotel to campus runs while they're here; both at fixed prices.
  • Return bookings, arranged once and cheaper than two singles. Ercan to Famagusta return is £100, Ercan to Nicosia £80, Ercan to Kyrenia £100.
  • A day out — graduation week is usually the one time the family sees the island. We quote a fixed full-day price for Kyrenia harbour and castle or the Karpaz peninsula and Golden Beach; the driver waits, and nobody watches the clock.

End of term and holiday returns

At the end of term the direction reverses, and the timing gets harder: many students fly out early in the morning, which means a pick-up before sunrise. At that hour there is essentially nothing waiting around campus.

The fix is simple — book the return at the same time as the arrival. Every reverse route has the same fixed price: Famagusta to Ercan Airport, Nicosia to Ercan Airport, Kyrenia to Ercan Airport and Guzelyurt to Ercan Airport. The fare matches the inbound journey and doesn't rise because the pick-up is early.

Students flying into the south: Larnaca, Paphos and the border

A large share of international students land at Larnaca, simply because so many European cities have a direct flight there. Landing in the south and continuing to a campus in the north is a routine journey, and far simpler than most people expect the first time.

The Green Line crossing is done from the car: your driver stops at the checkpoint, your passport is checked, and you carry on. You don't change vehicles and you don't carry your bags across. There is no extra charge to the passenger for the crossing — the price you booked is the price including the border. Getting around campus all year

The airport run happens twice a year; the other eight months are where student life actually is. Taxis don't cruise around campus areas here, and late at night there are almost none. Fixed-price local rides fill exactly that gap:

  • Between halls or your apartment and campus, especially for an early first lecture
  • Supermarket, hospital and pharmacy runs — a heavy shop isn't a walk
  • A safe ride home at night from the city centre
  • Sharing the fare with friends going the same way — the per-person cost drops
  • A priced monthly arrangement for regular, repeating journeys

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a transfer for a flight landing at 01:00?

Yes. Most student flights into Ercan land late anyway. We track your flight, so even with a delay the driver waits with your name board, and the fare doesn't go up because of the hour. The only thing that matters is having booked in advance.

I have two large suitcases — will they fit?

A standard saloon takes two large cases plus hand luggage comfortably. If you have more, or you're travelling with family, put the bag count in your booking and we'll send the 7-seat Vito minibus and confirm the price before you travel.

I'm landing at Larnaca — is crossing the border a problem?

No. The crossing is done from the car, takes a few minutes, and beyond a passport check nothing is asked of you. You don't change vehicles and you pay nothing extra for it — Larnaca to Famagusta is a fixed £90, Larnaca to Nicosia £80.

Does the same price apply to the return?

Yes. Reverse routes cost the same, and booking both directions together is cheaper still — Ercan to Famagusta return is £100, for example. For an early end-of-term flight, just tell us the pick-up time.
