The Güzelyurt plain has its own door to the south. Getting to Larnaca or Paphos does not mean driving east to Nicosia and doubling back: the Bostancı (Astromeritis) crossing at the eastern edge of the plain is the quick way out of this side of the island. Why Bostancı rather than the Nicosia gates

On a map the border looks like a single line, but the gates along it are not interchangeable. The Nicosia crossings sit inside city traffic, and reaching them from Güzelyurt means driving forty-five kilometres east only to turn back southwest. Bostancı sits at the eastern edge of the plain and feeds straight onto the main road south.

What happens at the gate

The crossing is shorter than most people expect. There are two checks a few hundred metres apart — one leaving the north, one entering the south — and you stay in the car for both. You hand over your passport, the officer looks, you drive on.

  • Passengers are not charged to cross. The vehicle's paperwork and insurance are the driver's business, not yours.
  • Keep your passport with you. It is a passport check rather than an ID check, and it applies to everyone in the car.
  • Queues, when they happen, are usually short — though for an early flight, booking the car the day before beats guessing at the morning traffic.

Southern runs through Bostancı

Larnaca Airport

About 100 km and 105 minutes from Güzelyurt. It is the busier of the two southern airports and takes most of the direct flights from Europe. The line: Guzelyurt to Larnaca Airport, and the return direction, Larnaca Airport to Guzelyurt.

Paphos Airport

About 115 km and 110 minutes from Güzelyurt — the road loops around the west coast, so it is longer than it looks on a map. From Lefke the picture changes: at 98 km and 95 minutes, Paphos is the shortest southern run there is. The lines: Guzelyurt to Paphos Airport and Lefke to Paphos Airport.

Limassol and the southern towns

Limassol is about 105 km and 100 minutes. This is the line for the port, the shops, or a day out in the south; the drive again goes through Bostancı and the fare is agreed before you set off. The line: Guzelyurt to Limassol.

Yeşilırmak (Limnitis): the west's second gate

The region has one more door to the south. Yeşilırmak (Limnitis) sits at the western tip and is noticeably closer to Lefke and the coastal villages than Bostancı. Two limits to plan around: it opens in daylight hours only, and it takes cars rather than foot traffic.

That is why pre-dawn departures and late-night landings usually route back through Bostancı. Which gate gets used is something the driver settles when the job is booked — you give the time, the line picks the crossing. Three things to say when you book

  • The flight number — for a landing in the south, the arrival time is tracked, so a delay does not cost you the car.
  • How many of you and how many cases — the right car is sent, which matters more on a cross-border run.
  • The return time — if you are coming back the same day, say so at the start; the gate choice and any waiting are agreed around it.
