The towns in Güzelyurt and Lefke are small and the villages sit apart from each other. A few cars pass through the centres during the day; in the villages nothing waits at all — not on the square, not outside the coffee house. Out here the nearest taxi is the one you call. There is a single number, and the same line works from the Güzelyurt plain to the western tip of Lefke.

How far one number reaches

No village has a rank of its own, and none is expected to. The line covers three areas together, all reached by the same call:

  • The Güzelyurt plain — Zümrütköy, Akçay, Aydınköy, Serhatköy, Güneşköy, Şahinler, Mevlevi, Gayretköy, Yuvacık, İkidere, Yayla and Bostancı
  • Kalkanlı and the campus area — METU Northern Cyprus, the dorms and Kalkanlı village itself
  • The Lefke coast and western tip — Gemikonağı, Denizli, Gaziveren, Yedidalga, Bademliköy, Cengizköy, Çamlıköy, Doğancı, Yeşilyurt and Yeşilırmak

Because the distances between them are short, going from one village to the next is usually quicker than dropping into town and back out again. The car starts from wherever it happens to be free, not from a central rank.

Describing where you are

Street names rarely help in a village, and without signposts satellite navigation misleads as often as it helps. The description that works fastest has three parts: the village, the nearest fixed landmark, and which side you are coming from.

  • "Zümrütköy, opposite the coffee house" is more reliable than any street name
  • The mosque, the school, the muhtar's office, the shop and the football pitch are known points in every village
  • Where two places share a name, say which road you are on — Aşağı and Yukarı Bostancı are separate places
  • On campus, name the dorm block or the faculty building rather than just "METU"

Sending your location on WhatsApp settles it just as well; the driver comes straight to the pin. The car works door to door, so there is no meeting point to find.

Where the village trips go

Most journeys here turn around a handful of fixed destinations:

  • Güzelyurt centre — the market, the bank, the pharmacy and the state hospital
  • Kalkanlı — the campus, the dorms and the runs that follow the timetable
  • Lefke — European University of Lefke, the health sciences campus and student housing
  • Nicosia and Kyrenia — paperwork, appointments and same-day returns
  • The airports — Ercan, Larnaca and Paphos, arranged ahead against the flight time

Evenings are quiet in the villages. With nothing left on the road, agreeing the run home in advance matters more here than it does for a trip in the middle of the day.

Two crossings among the villages

This corner has two gates to the south, and both sit out among the villages. Bostancı (Astromeritis) is at the eastern edge of the plain; journeys towards Larnaca and Paphos go through it rather than the Nicosia gates, because it is the faster way west. Yeşilırmak (Limnitis) is at the western tip and is the closest crossing to Lefke. Two things to plan around at Yeşilırmak: it opens in daylight hours only, and it takes cars rather than foot traffic — so a late return is worth checking on the phone first.

How the fare is agreed

Airport routes have a published fixed fare. For village journeys the price depends on the pickup point, the hour and any waiting, so the figure is agreed on the phone before the car sets off. No meter runs: the fare is settled first and there is no surprise at the door. If several people are going the same way, sharing one car brings the cost per head down.

Common questions

There is no taxi rank in my village — how do I get a car?

By calling. Nothing waits in any of the villages here; the line runs off one number and covers the Güzelyurt plain, Kalkanlı and the Lefke coast together. Give the village and the nearest landmark and that is enough.

Do you come out to small villages?

Yes. Every village in the region is on the same line, and a short trip is no obstacle. If you are planning an evening journey from a far village, calling early makes the car certain.

Can I book an airport run from a village?

Yes. Ercan, Larnaca and Paphos are arranged ahead against the flight time; on arrivals the flight is tracked, so the driver waits on the real landing time rather than the printed one.

Can I get back to the village at night?

Yes, by arrangement. After dark there is nothing free on the village roads, so agreeing the return time when you set out keeps the journey simple.

What if I cannot describe the address?

Send your location on WhatsApp. When there is no landmark to name, that is the quickest route to the door.
